Glen's Game

Evening program tonight is a camper favorite... Glen's Game! This game sees our staff set up four different spots that campers need to get to by the end of the game. These spots are unknown to the campers at the start of the game and once they find out what these spots are, they need to avoid counselors as they try to get there. If successful the camper gets a mark on their hand and hopefully, by the end of the game they have four different marks representing the four different spots.

However, as campers try to get to these areas, there are counselors waiting to get them. Each camper has a flag tucked in their pants and counselors chase them in an attempt to get their flag. Campers who get their flags taken away must report to jail and wait for a jail break in order to re-enter the game.

Glen's Game has become a key North Star activity and when it gets put on the calendar, campers inevitably get excited. Even campers new to North Star know about Glen's Game. One of the really neat things about Glen's Game, though, is that it shows that every staff member and camper can make a lasting impact at North Star. About nine years ago Leb was looking for an idea for an evening program and one of our first time counselors, Glen Miller suggested a game he had played elsewhere. Now "Glen's Game" has become a regular.

This is one of the great things about camp... maybe its an idea for a special program and before you know it, it becomes a fixture on the camp calendar... or maybe its a cheer or song that a few campers come up with and it becomes a regular part of village cheers in the lodge. Campers and counselors, new and old, come up with the ideas that become the key parts of camp. Camps are places of tradition and we often thing that "this is the way its always been" or "that program has been around forever", but it takes individuals to come up with those things that become traditions and each day provides opportunities to create new traditions.

Who is Connor Jackson?

Who is Connor Jackson? That is the question haunting Leb over the course of the past week.  We have no campers at North Star by that name.  We have no staff by that name.  We do not even have any alumni by that name. Yet Connor Jackson is the biggest name at camp.

It all started at the beginning of last week when Sue, our very own Inspector #12, was doing her daily inspections of the cabins.  When she arrived in cabin J-2, she found more than she bargained for.  On the floor of the cabin was a bouquet of flowers and a poem to Sue.  While reading this, keep in mind that the residents of cabin J-2 are 10-years-old!

Roses are red,

Violets are blue,

Our cabin is clean,

and I love you.

Every day for the last week, the same thing happened - more flowers, new poems.  Then it started to escalate! The poems started to include P.S. notes like "Leb is great, but he has nothing on me," and "Sorry Robert, you can't keep Sue away from me." And each day, Sue would bring her flowers and love letters to announcements to flaunt her secret admirer.  And each day, Cabin J-2 was earning Cabin Pride Awards, North Star's highest achievement in cleanliness.  But Connor Jackson's true identity remained unknown.

Then yesterday at announcements, our staff decided to replicate the scene from Spartacus with everyone standing up and yelling "I am Connor Jackson!" "No, I am Connor Jackson!" Until the whole camp was claiming to be Sue's secret admirer.

Things became really quite complicated today when cabin J-7 left a teddy bear and a love poem from Connor Jackson yet J-2 still had their latest rendition available to woo Sue into another Cabin Pride Award.

As darkness falls on another great day of camp, the mystery of Connor Jackson remains...

Aside from these shenanigans, we've had a great couple of days.  Beginning on Sunday, all of our campers began their second set of projects and are getting to dabble in new activities.  Sunday night's evening program was a "Recess Remix/Schoolyard Rocks" medley.  Every camper went on a rotation between the games of Settlers vs Rustlers, Freeze Tag, Wall Ball and Sharks and Minnows.  It was the creation of our brilliant Village Directors, who made the night a blast for all.

Cabins I-6 and S-1 returned today from their five-day hiking trips in the Porcupine Mountains and both trips were a great success.  Tonight's evening program was Village Campfires - where all three villages had their own campfire programs including group games, village cheers, songs, stories, and, most importantly, s'mores.  It was an opportunity for each village to showcase the talents of its campers and staff alike, and boy are there a lot of talents.

With one week of camp in the books, we are off to a fantastic start! The North Star community is buzzing with enthusiasm, talent, and friendships new and old.  Stay tuned for more Leb's Rambling's and Summer Pics.

The Friendship Fire and a Wacky Weather Day

Only in the Northwoods can the sky look as different as it did today between the time we entered breakfast and the time we left. First it seemed like we were going to have a beautiful day on our hands, then maybe a stormy one.  It turned out we had a little of both, but the sun proved victorious.

We started today with the whole camp in the lodge for some serious Bingo. There was a palpable enthusiasm in the Lodge, with great prizes like Disc Golf lessons, extra Wanegans, or the right to babysit for Phoebe (Leb and Sue's dog).  But the real clamor was for the grand prize - a trip to Dairy Queen for the cabin! When all was said and done, the mighty cabin of J-1 took home the gold.

The rain stopped and allowed 2nd period to take place under the sun.  After lunch, as I walked through the Junior Village cabins during rest period, I realized that there was not a lot of rest taking place.  In J-6, the counselors were running an energetic game of the obscure card game "Bang!" that the campers were loving.  In J-1, J-2 and J-3 the staff were leading games of Mafia, which allows all of our future attorneys to shine.  In J-4 there was a continuation of the Bunk Basketball tournament, that proves that you really can play ball in the house, as long as your parents are not around! And in J-7, the staff put a new spin on the rest period classic of Rafterball and had all of the campers involved.  With counselors like this, it is easy to see why camp is off to such a great start!

The afternoon was out of order - we had third period followed by an extended first period with a quick rain shower in between. But the weird day concluded with a classic - The Friendship Fire.

The Friendship Fire is a tradition that continues from the very first summer at North Star in 1945, when Lou and Renee Rosenblum conducted North Star's very first Friday Night Service at the Council Ring.  The theme of the campfire program is camp's most important value, friendship, which Lou and Renee stressed at camp from the start. 

One part of the service has a representative from each city throw a key long into the fire and say "This Keylog represents the bond of friendship between [his hometown] and North Star Camp." This summer we have just under 100 cities from around the world represented. This marked the debut of the 2010 version of the Camper Counselor Chorus, and Tennis Mike played a great musical selection. The highlight of the evening  though was Michael Eichner's sermonette about the true meaning of camp friendships and what makes them so special.

As we walked back into camp from the Council Ring, the same sky that tinkered with our daily program gave us a beautiful pink sunset with majestic clouds that help make Friday Nights at North Star so special.  

We Now Return To Our Regularly Scheduled Programming!

It was our first day of electives, but before the wake-up bell even sounded, it was time for our Pine Manor campers to depart for the Canadian.  Cabins Pine, Manor and McCabin boarded a bus headed for Atikokan, Ontario, where they will spend tonight at Canoe Canada Outfitters, before embarking tomorrow morning on a camping trip for the ages.  They will spend nine days in the Canadian wilderness in Quetico Provincial Park, as they canoe and portage their way through pristine country.  We are very proud of our group of Pine Manor campers and look forward to hearing all about their trip when they return.

Meanwhile, at camp we had our first day of our regular program, which was anything but regular with our great staff at the helm.  Yesterday, each camper selected his own schedule of electives for the week, and today they began to participate.  (Read more about the NSC Program) We had great activities running from the athletic fields to the waterfront. To see the pictures, check out the Summer Pics.  All around camp, you could see counselors providing great instruction to all of the campers and helping them improve and enjoy!

Some afternoon drizzle was not going to stop our campers from having a blast.  We had our first round of Challenge Games, which saw our J-1 and J-2 campers going head to head in an epic game of kickball.  We had two games of Ultimate Frisbee, a game of Continuous Dodgeball, floor hockey, and softball all playing on until the sun would shine again.

After dinner, we had the first Wanegan of the summer as new king Andy Rodheim led the cheers for candy! The rain stayed away for evening program, which allowed for a round-robin football extravaganza, a Baggo tournament, disc golf, and much more. This was only the beginning of a great summer!

North Star News-June 21, 2010

We left Chicago 3 minutes ahead of schedule with over 100 kids excited to get to camp. As I write this I am on the bus driving through a heavy rain but I'm sure its sunny at camp. (Well, I've arrived and it was pouring rain!. Sue had it totally under control and the kids debarked the buses to counselors holding tarps and a procession began into Mike Hall. Very exciting and loud!!)

And as I write this 11 staff members are at the Minneapolis airport meeting campers arriving by planes from all over the United States and a few International cities. However, as you read this we have all arrived safely at camp. (Well, actually, one camper from Kansas City is yet to arrive) I can visualize the crazy scene that will have taken place around the flag pole(actually it took place in Mike Hall) where I will have announced cabin assignments to much enthusiasm and cheering from our counselors.(The place was NUTS!!)

The kids have unpacked and new campers have been given a tour of camp.(Well, actually the baggage is still in the truck because of the rain and we'll unload after dinner. The tour will take place later also. It looks like the rain will have passed by dinner time) I imagine that most kids will be playing in some kind of activity and learning the names of all the kids in their cabin.

Dinner this evening will be burgers, fries, jello, salad and the ever present peanut butter and jelly. There will be vegetarian burgers available for those that prefer, and brownies for dessert. The pre-camp food has been delicious and I believe your boys will be well fed this summer.

More outside activity this evening followed by the traditional candlelight ceremony. Led by the counselors the kids will share their goals and expectations for the summer. This will be the first of many cabin discussions that are an important part of the "team" building goals that we have for each cabin group.

Tomorrow the kids will have a busy day as they get checked out by the medical staff, take a swim test, choose their 1st weeks schedule and find time to play several games of dodge ball and capture the flag. Tomorrow evenings program is the staff talent show.

Let me tell you about our staff. In a word, they are awesome!!

We have spent the last week training our guys and we have really enjoyed spending time with them. Many of them are returnees from previous years so we already knew their talents. Our new staff members have brought additional musical skills, humor and they just seem to be the nicest guys. Everyone is getting along so well that the week has been an absolute pleasure! And the pre camp staff talent show demonstrated that this group has real talent. The kids will see it tomorrow.

And these guys provide us with so many laughs in such creative ways. After 6 days of training they were given time off Saturday afternoon and evening. Sue and I have learned that the stories the day after the first night off are entertaining. This year was no different. Our CIT's are 16 year old former campers and this time off is for many the first time they have done their own laundry. Our CIT Director, Jeff McCormack actually wrote out a 10 step instruction manual on doing laundry. Not everyone paid attention. We heard about Benji Friedman trying to stuff his bed sheet into the lint compartment of the dryer. We heard about Jeremy Schmetterer who washed his clothes but forgot to put in the laundry detergent. But the best story of the night belongs to new staff member John Sheehan. After laundry and after dinner about 40 guys decided to go watch Toy Story at the movies. Well, wouldn't you know that a group of Birch Trail (nearby Girls Camp) staff members also decided to go to the movies. So John's brilliant idea was to sit in every other seat encouraging some inner camp socialization. The ladies walked in, looked around and walked to the front of the theater and watched the entire movie with stiff necks. And we haven't even started yet!

Aw... Summer camp!! I guarantee that your kids will have a fantastic summer. Our staff is committed to insure a fantastic experience and after spending the week with them I am positive they will be successful.

Our overnight trip program begins with a roar on Wednesday when our oldest campers leave for 9 days on their Canadian camping trip. Throughout their camping careers they have taken cabin trips with their bunk mates ranging in length from 2 days when they were younger and then went on 3 and 4 day trips before the Canadian adventure this summer. We'll tell you more as the summer progresses.

One More Day!

The countdown on Leb's Ramblings now reads "1 Day!" The staff at camp are so excited for the campers to arrive and get the Summer of 2010 underway.  We can't wait to see you all tomorrow at the buses and the airport.  We have campers coming to North Star this summer from 20 different states and internationally as well, and the real fun begins when you all arrive tomorrow.

The Final Countdown!

With only two days until camp begins, you can feel the excitement building in the air around here. Some of our staff have been here for almost a month getting camp ready and getting trained in their various activity areas.  More importantly, our whole staff has been here the last week receiving the "North Star Doctorate in Child Development," as we prepare them to take outstanding care of our campers.

And most importantly, we have seen that the 2010 North Star Staff is incredible!

Pre-camp orientation is a jam-packed week that includes everything you can imagine.  We start with getting to know you games and tours of camp.  Everybody gets introduced to the North Star program, philosophy and they learn as much as they possibly can in preparation for the arrival of the campers.  There are a lot of preparations made for each program area and work details to be accomplished around camp.

And of course we have a little fun as well.  We had a great staff show on Thursday night that included talents of every variety, from musical to comical, and even some carnival acts.  We had our first gathering at the Council Ring on Friday night and a formal retreat preceding it.

We have had a great week and still have two days of preparation ahead of us to make things even better.  But if you were here, you would no doubt feel that this staff is primed and ready to make the Summer of 2010 unforgettable!
